Baseball - River Rivals
In 2005 West Newbury created the River Rivals Summer Baseball Tournament to offer kids a way to continue playing baseball through the first half of the Summer.
Ages / Divisions / Costs
- 1G/2G - Farm @ $550 per Team
- 3G/4G - Minors @ $550 per Team
- 5G/6G - Majors @ $650 per Team
No player may play on more than one team in the same Division.
If you register more than one team in a Division we ask that you create equally-skilled teams instead of an 'A' team and a 'B' team.
When
The River Rivals Tournament starts shortly after the Spring Season ends, and typically concludes in mid-July.
Games
Teams should be prepared to play one-to-two games per week. Weekday games typically start at 5:45pm and times will vary for weekend games.
There will be pool play games to determine ranking and then once the Tournament play starts it is single-elimination.
We do our best to make up games which are rained out.
Practices
Since this is a regional Tournament teams are welcome to practice at a location which works for them; however, some practice time can probably be allocated at one of the Tournament fields if needed. Please inquire with the Tournament's Director.
Where
Games are played at:
- Burham Field in West Newbury (15 Bachelor St)
- Washington Park in Groveland (89 Center St)
Jerseys
Each team is required to provide their team a jersey. However, there are no jersey requirements, and matching jerseys are not required.
Commitment
We understand that many teams try to play in many tournaments over the Summer and will do our best to accommodate your schedule restrictions. However, we also need you to understand that field space is limited and there are games almost every night so we cannot guarantee we will be able to provide a schedule which exactly matches your availability.
No blackout dates will be accommodated for any team.
Field Dimensions
Burham Field
- The Major Division will use our Major Field. On this field the mound is 50' from home plate and the basepaths are 70'. There is a backstop, and a 4' full outfield fence - that fence averages ~185' from home plate.
- The Minor Division will use our Minor Field. On this field the mound is 46' from home plate and the basepaths are 60'. There is a backstop and a 4' fence in left field - that fence is ~175' down the third base line and runs perpendicular to the third base line.
- The Farm Division will use our Farm Field. On this field the mound is 40' from home plate and the basepaths are 60'. There is a backstop, but there is no reachable outfield fence.
The Minor and Farm Fields do partially share an outfield, though this is typically not a problem since the two fields' home plates are ~300' apart.
Feel free to use Google's satellite imagery and distance measuring here. In the image the Major Field is on the right, the Minor Field is in the middle, and the Farm Field is on the left.
Washington Park
- The Major Division will use our Major Field. On this field the mound is 50' from home plate and the basepaths are 70'. There is a backstop, and a 7' fence across most of the outfield and that fence averages ~195' from home plate, but is much deeper to rightfield compared to leftfield.
- The Minor Division will use our Minor Field. On this field the mound is 46' from home plate and the basepaths are 60'. There is a backstop, and a 4' full outfield fence - that fence averages ~190' from home plate.
Google's satellite imagery can be found here. In the image the Major Field is in the center and the Minor Field is on the left.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a Team need to provide?
Nothing, and your registration cost covers all expenses (e.g. - Umpires, Balls, Field Prep, etc.)
What are the age restrictions?
Since each State and Town has different cutoff dates for school grades the Tournament requests that players play for the Division which matches the current grade they are in (if the school year has not yet ended), or the grade they just completed if the school year is over.
Are there pitch count restrictions?
Yes, but only within the Tournament. The pitch count restrictions are documented in the Rules Guide which can be found here.
Pitch counts will be recorded as part of score entry and this site will be used to track pitchers' eligibility.
Please Remember: Pitch count limits are per day, not per game, as are the rounding rules. For example, if a team plays two games in a day and William pitches 30 pitches in the first game and 31 pitches in the second game (needing two pitches to get the final batter) then William is recorded as 60 pitches for the day (assuming 60 is a threshold).
Are there places to eat nearby?
Both locations have a Snack Shack staffed to serve hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, etc. However, if you'd rather something like pizza there are multiple places within a short drive. And also even more offerings in Haverhill, Newburyport, and Georgetown, if you're okay with a longer drive.
Is there anything for my younger kids to do while the games are being played?
Both locations have multiple play structures, swings, and tables.
